Nets For Nights

HELP MAKE A CHANGE

Our Fight to End Malaria

The Nets For Nights Project aims to eliminate death and disease caused by malaria in the Kisumu East and West Sub Counties by providing Insecticide Treated Bed Nets costing $10AUD per net.

Africa bears the burden of 95% of malaria cases and 96% of deaths worldwide. Sadly, 80% of all deaths in the Africa Region are children under the age of 5 years.

Between 2019 and 2020, estimated malaria cases increased from 213 million to 228 million, and deaths from 534000 to 602000 in the WHO African Region. This region accounted for about 95% of cases and 96% of deaths globally; 80% of all deaths in this region are among children aged under 5 years.

Since 2000 malaria case incidence had reduced from 368 to 222 cases per 1000 population at risk in 2019, before increasing to 233 in 2020 owing to disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

THE WORK WE DO

Your Greatest Good

One of the greatest goods you can do in the world today is to buy an Insecticide Treated Bed Net for a child in Sub Sahara Africa. This region alone bears the burden of 94% of the 229 million cases of Malaria annually! Sadly, 64% of those are children under 5 years. Every 1-minute a child dies from malaria, a completely preventable disease.

GOAL

To purchase Insecticide Treated Bed Nets for children aged 3 to 5 years and vulnerable groups (HIV+). Without intervention these groups will record a high prevalence of Malaria. In some cases causing death. Working parents may also forfeit their employment obligations to take care of their children and the cycle of poverty continues.

ACTIVITIES

As the Australian project partner we work closely with a local organisation in Kisumu, Kenya. By collaborating with Lead Mission we have been able to provide Insecticide Treated Bed Nets (LLINets) along with education on their proper use and care. Community health volunteers continue to provide education about the deadly nature of malaria and how it can be prevented by using the nets.

Delivered With Integrity

Caregivers form an integral part of the net distribution to children in ECDs. Every child is required to have a parent/caregiver sign for the net they receive. Furthermore, their identification number must be indicated.

Among those who receive nets are orphans. It is not uncommon for their grandparents to receive a net for their grandchild. As some are illiterate, they are required to fix their fingerprint as evidence that the net has been received.

Community Partnership

Collaboration with Community Health Volunteers ensures that distribution of LLITNs is done in accordance with the Ministry of Health guidelines.

For monitoring and evaluation purposes, all data is captured by the Malaria Prevention County team and included in the National Annual target achievement for Net distribution to vulnerable groups.
